Childhood Dizziness

Dizzy, Vertigo, Dizziness, Meniere's, Spinning, Balance IssuesVertigo and dizziness are symptoms that we often think only occur in adults. Children having balance and dizziness issues is more common than you may assume. It is estimated that approximately 5% of children in the U.S. between the ages of 3-17 have had episodes of dizziness or loss of balance. These episodes were slightly more common in girls (5.7% vs. 5%). (1)

A few sources of dizziness in children include:

  • Neurological issues
  • Ear infections
  • Concussions
  • Injuries to the head or neck
  • Ear malformation

Only one-third of parents stated that they had a diagnosis of their child’s dizziness. When looking for a solution to balance issues, it is essential to uncover the root cause.

How is my child’s spine related to their dizziness?
Your spine is designed to protect your spinal cord. Your spinal cord carries signals to and from your brain. When the top bone in your neck (atlas) is misaligned, this can create pressure within your spinal cord at the base of your neck. This can affect signals going to and from your brainstem, potentially leading to vertigo and dizziness symptoms.

The doctors at HP Spine Center are trained in Orthospinology, a precise chiropractic procedure that detects and corrects atlas misalignments. Orthospinology is a very specific and gentle chiropractic technique that does not involve any twisting, popping, or cracking. Through realignment of the atlas, pressure within the spinal cord is reduced. The brainstem is able to send and receive messages without distortion. This may lead to a reduction of vertigo symptoms.

Elster conducted an analysis of 60 patients with chronic vertigo that received specific atlas corrections. 48 out of the 60 patients received complete resolution of vertigo symptoms. All of the cases received some reduction of vertigo severity and or frequency over the course of one to six months of atlas care. (2)
